On Friday, after a full moon and a week including Friday the 13th things got even stranger and more crazy at school. The coronavirus which spread from China to Europe and now to the USA is causing havoc everywhere. Because the virus spreads so quickly and symptoms don't arise for up to 14 days, extensive measures have to be taken in order to stop the spread. During the week we received numerous emails for how to prepare including getting extra lysol wipes and being told to have students wash their hands before lunch and use hand sanitizer as often as possible. My students were obviously stressed and unsure about all of this news.
All day Friday we received messages about preparing for a possible school closure and how to make lesson plans to prepare. One of these included closing schools on Monday so that the teachers could have a work day to prepare. These plans were all undone when the Governor, Ralph Northam, made an order to close all schools for a minimum of two weeks. This announcement happened at 2:00 pm on Friday. You can imagine what ensued after that announcement. I quickly cleaned out my fridge, tried to come up with a lesson plan, and straightened up my room while receiving texts messages from everyone with questions. We went ahead and held activity period during the last hour. Thankfully I had a coloring activity with only a few students. Students cleaned out their lockers and we all headed home with lots of uncertainty.
When I got home Emily was already out of school because they had a planned early dismissal so they did not even get to clean out their lockers. Earlier in the week, I had ordered extra things like toilet paper, medications, dog food etc. because of the threat of a lock down. Thankfully I got these orders in before there was a run on all of these items. All over the news there is talk of empty shelves, no lysol or wipes, no toilet paper or paper towels and groceries that have been wiped out. Jeff and made a grocery run and stock up on some things, but found shortages of things like chicken (there was NONE). How scary is it to think you may not be able to go out AND you don't have the things you need at home?! Don't get me wrong, we probably have food for weeks because that's just how we stock up probably because of my fear of things like this happening and my need to always be prepared. However, seeing it actually happen is quite frightening. We have all seen what happens before a snowstorm, but this is unreal.
Here are some pictures of what we did over the weekend other than watch the news, look at the coronavirus trackers, and try to make sure we had everything we needed if we were stuck at home for an extended period of time.
We've had to get creative with new toys for Finn...anything in the kitchen is fair game when you are trying to get something done and need her distracted.
Getting outside is good for us all!
Look at those two bottom teeth!!
Grandma watch Finley for a little bit while I ran out to get some more groceries! This virus is much worse for people over 60 years old so we are keeping Mom at home as much as possible.
One of Finn's new favorite things to do is roll around and root on the couch....she is just like one of the dogs. haha!
If Finley suddenly disappears it is because she quickly crawls to our bedroom to open and shut the door and play in front of the mirror behind the door. The mirror is still her favorite!
